Inmate bites off tip of deputy’s finger in scuffle
A Jessamine County Detention Center employee was injured early Thursday when an inmate who was being moved to a different cell bit the tip of one of the deputy’s fingers, the jailer said.
Two deputies were moving the inmate, who has not been identified, about 4:30 a.m. Thursday when the man attacked them, jailer Cecil Moss said.
The inmate struck one deputy, Moss said. Then, during an ensuing scuffle, the other deputy’s finger landed in the inmate’s mouth, and the inmate bit off a small part of the tip of one finger.
Moss said it was a minor injury; the inmate did not even bite off the fingernail. But the deputy needed to be treated for the injury and checked for diseases, including hepatitis.
The deputy, whose name also has not been released, is being treated at Bluegrass Orthopedics.
Moss said the inmate probably will be charged with assault on a correctional officer.
